The hardware works just fine, but I am in the dark as to really making USE of the thing, particularly via DMA transfers. We run an RT11SJ monitor with 4 MB Virtual Memory handler (i.e., 22-bit addressing), to which the PARALLAX board supposedly has complete access. BUT, 2 major problems stand in our way: 1. I am a novice Assembly Language programmer... the tricks of the trade are still beyond me; 2. More importantly, we have not received any decent documentation from the manufacturer. We have an introductory manual which describes what commands are available, but no information on how to use them. This manual came in August 85 with a disclaimer saying a User's Manual would be distributed in October. By January, the sales engineer promised doc's by February. No such luck. We have managed to dump some of the driver software, and I'm still in the process of "decoding" it, but time is running out, and I'm spinning my wheels. SOOOOO, I would deeply appreciate ANY information in the following categories: 1. General info on writing efficient software for DMA transfers on the Q-bus with 22-bit addressing. (The trick seems to be getting around not only the Monitor and the VM: handler, but rebuilding the page-address registers. I have not been lucky enough...) 2. Any word from other PARALLAX users. I have lots of nice stuff going in PIO-type transfers, but that sort of defeats the purpose of buying a 12-Mpixel/sec graphics processor. 3. Information on where I can study up on Multi-color, bit-plane type graphics and its uses. Fellow TekniCAD users, I am developing a computer-aided-drafting capability, using Tektronix TekniCAD, for our group here at the Naval Research Lab. One of the most useful features of such a package is the ability to insert predefined symbols into design documents. Unfortunately, Tektronix appears to be leaving it up to the users to generate and distribute these symbol libraries. I've started developing a library of symbols to be used in drawing and machining electronic instrument panels. This will include symbols for D-Subminiature connectors, terminal blocks and EIA panels, etc. But, I'm sure that this has been done before. Supposedly, there are over 200 such applications packages for AutoCAD. We should be doing what we can to protect our investment. If anyone out there has generated symbol libraries or useful macros for TekniCAD, or knows of another source or forum that I should check (this includes Tektronix insiders), please contact me either through this net or directly at: FINK@NRL-ACOUSTICS I would be interested in any sort of dialog regarding TekniCAD and symbol libraries for all design diciplines. A summary of available files will be shared with all respondents. Thank you, Richard G. Fink ------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 86 11:50 EST From: "Steven H. Gutfreund" Subject: Request for information I am looking for a reference. Is there some work that attempts to produce a comprehensive study of graphical representation (schematics) that are used by professionals. Examples would be architects, systems analysts, industrial designers, and logistic planners. There are, of course, civil engineers who actually go and construct scale models of things like dams, etc, and conduct their analysis on them. But I am looking for people who use 2-d and multidemenntional paper schematics for their analsys. Especially interesting are schematics which are not just passive, but allow the user to carry out graphical analysis on that chart. Something on the order of a fileVision, except that fileVision only does data queries. - Steven Gutfreund gutfreund@umass-cs.csnet ------------------------------ End of INFO-GRAPHICS ********************
