Here at The Land That Time Forgot (erm, JPL that is), you folks out there might be interested to know that both Galileo, and the not-to-fly-till-at-least-1989 Venus Radar Mapper mission (Magellan) are *both* using rad-hardened 1802's as the main CPU in the Command Data Subsystem. There are Flight Software people here even now huddled over their RCA COSMAC development systems ... The people doing test software have to upload Hex'ed binary files from the COSMAC to an IBM PC, run them through a filter program, upload again to a Sun-2 which is the main front end to the Lab Test Set (LTS) which finally uploads it into a breadboard version (in VRM's case) of the CDS ... Flight Software may get all the glory, but gimme my leading-edge Suns anyday. Anyhow, next time you reminisce about the 1802, shed a tear for those people for whom the past is not as far back as you think :-) "Forward, into the Past!"
