I just recently went through this when moving form NJ to Taxachusettes
and bringing my 2 year old Datsun with me.  All I had to do to avoid
paying sales tax was show them my NJ ownership papers which stated I
paid the sales tax in NJ.  If you still have all the paperwork you
should probably be able to get the money refunded.  Good Luck.
