I want to second the recommendation to read the Oz books.
I had three available to me as a child and I loved them!
I think my all-time favorite is "The Lost Princess of Oz."

The first 14 are variously available in paperback; I was lucky
enough to find hardbacks.  The last 19 are being released three
at a time by Del-Rey.  If you are not familiar with these books,
but you liked the movie, check them out.  The books are *much*
more fun than the movie and most are a lot better than the first
book.  L. Frank Baum used to incorporate ideas sent to him by
children and the books are written so children can enjoy the
magic, but adults can enjoy the puns (there are lots of those).
