Baum has also written numerous other books, some of whose characters
appear briefly in the Oz books.  Lately I've seen in print:

The Magical Monarch Of Mo  and
Queen Zixi Of Ix

The latter is one of the finest fairy tales ever written, with illustrations
that surpass those of the Oz books.

If you ever have the opportunity to see the movies made by Baum, don't
pass up the chance.  They played for a few weeks here in Cambridge.
They stay much closer to the books than later movies, and have much the
same flavor as the illustrations.  I'll never forget the scene when the
Scarecrow meets the Patchwork Girl and falls in love....
