If you have access to fireplace ashes, you can put a border of them a couple of inches wide around the plants you want to protect; be careful about leaves touching the ground outside the border, and similar stuff. This works, but you have to reapply the ashes after rain or watering, so it's somewhat of a pain. I guess everyone knows that commercial slug/snail repellers are dangerous to have around if there are small children or pets in the area. I thought garlic protected against vampires.....
