For Slug control, one book ("Winter Gardening in the Maritime Northwest"
[excellent]) has lots of info about slugs..  Some things people don't
realize: slugs are migratory, this means even if you go out and kill all of
them in your yard, new ones will be passing through;  ducks eat slugs.
One suggestion is a fence made out of sheet metal shaped like the picture
below (slugs can't climb it).
