Actually, PUP is a very *bad* protocol to pick unless you are either
supporting existing PUP machines, or want to write something very
simple.  The reason for this is that it has no growth potential.
Even Xerox is giving it up (though *very* slowly).

I would suggest TCP/IP, or Xerox NS, or maybe even some ISO stuff....
