Summary: How to do it *without* Preferences

I'm using a 9" black and white TV as my monitor (yeah, I know, yeeeech)
hence normally run with 60 chars/line.  When I go into my favorite term
prog I want 80 chars.  What I generally do is to run Preferences to re-set
it--all subsequent windows that don't specify otherwise get 80 chars.
What I'd like to do is run a *small* program to change it dynamically--is
there such a beast?
