Turns out I was more-or-less right on both counts. Atari Games acknowledges a debt to DANDY in their development of Gauntlet, but claims theirs was an independent idea that just happened to end up looking similar. DANDY is, indeed, still available through ANTIC magazine, for the incredible bargain price of $12.95!!
