Well, it happened to me: the infamous sad faced mac off of my hard disk
running under MacXL.

Someone a few days ago suggested a recovery procedure that involved
booting off of MacTools and then doing the disk repair.  Unfortunately,
when I do that, I cannot get the system to recognize that there is a
hard disk out there.  I would appreciate (very, very much) a step
by step, key stroke by key stroke, tutorial on how to recover.

Alternately, I do have a wierd procedure to get to the point where it
tries to build the desk top and fails.  I get the messages:
  (a) "..disk needs minor repairs.." when I say OK, then the repair fails,
      resulting in
  (b) "Couldn't unlock the desktop file. Unlock the disk?" At this point,
      I cannot get it to accept anything but an "OK" which then results 
      in the system not being able to access the hard disk.
So, the question is: is there a way that I could get the system NOT to build
the desktop, and at the same time leave the hard disk logically attached?
Then, I could try to fix the disk. I know that MacTools will handle diskettes,
but I can't seem to get it to deal with the hard disk.  (My weird procedure is
to boot the system off of a good hard disk, open something (MacPaint, MacTools),swap cables to connect the problem disk, then close the application. )
