I have been using Aztec with the Assimilation Process ramdisk for a while now (on a Mac 512K); the only way I've found to make the ramdisk the system disk is with the "Create temporary disk automatically at startup" command. Unfortunately it insists on Finder as the startup program. So, I have it start up with System, Finder and Shell on the ramdisk; when it boots (running Finder from the ramdisk), I double-click the Shell on the ramdisk; the Shell's .profile then removes Finder from the ramdisk and copies in /bin. The boot floppy can now be ejected and forgotten. System, Shell and /bin just fit in a 316K ramdisk; those and Finder and the ramdisk program just fit on a 400K floppy. Only problem is there's no room for Edit, I have to use Z (Manx's "vi" clone, which would be usable if it only had a replace command!!). Manx seems to be saying "real soon now" (end of March? April?) for the HFS-compatible Shell. Hopefully by that time Apple will have finally shipped Mac upgrade kits to the dealers.... --Mike Rubin rubin@topaz.rutgers.edu.arpa.earth.solar_system.milky_way
