I'd like to cast my vote for tan lines.  The contrast between the way 
the skin looks and the way the skin feels ("Gee, the white part 
doesn't feel any different!") is ultra-wicked-awesome-excellent hot. 

(ahem)

I don't know, though.  According to Michael Tolliver in Armisted 
Maupin's "Tales of the City" series, tan lines went out with the 
Seventies.
