Telenet is a public X.25 packet switched network that is run by the
GTE Telenet Communications Corp. (a former employer).  It is related
somewhat to ARPAnet in that the developers of APRAnet later formed
Telenet, which was gobbled up by GTE a few years ago.  Don't know
much about APRAnet, (or for that matter Telenet (:-), but Telenet
is a value added carrier, serving basically as a data conduit.
For each packet (really kilopacket) transmitted someone is billed.
For most areas of the country you can call a 1200 or 300 baud gateway
and then connect to any accepting host.  I know that Telenet has under-
gone many changes since my departure (1982) and I may not be accurate.
