Many returning Russian POWs were killed by Stalin's orders. He was paranoid about the presence of German collaborators and/or Western agents in the returning POWs. Actually, there WERE a reasonable number of collaborators among the POWs. To make sure he got them, Stalin killed or imprisoned most (perhaps nearly all) returning POWs.
