Dowels and splines serve one purpose, to keep the boards in alignment while clamping. They offer no greater strength than a plain flat joint. However, alingment is important and can be tricky when clamping since the boards want to slip out of alignment as pressure is applied. Numerous books and articles in various magazines will offer greatly detailed information for your edification. My favorite method is to use a special cutter on my shaper called a "glue joint". This joint alings my boards and allows me to apply glue very quickly without having to spread it with a brush or my finger. If you would like more detailed information on different techniques I would be glad to mail xerox copy to you. Please contact me with your mailing address. Paul Salazar (919) 279-6318
