I don't remember where I heard this, but it had the ring of truth.  

Seems there was a large magnetic drum memory that had to be moved.  The
bearings worked so well that it would take several hours/days to come to a
halt after being turned off.  The moving company didn't wait.  When they
attached a crane to it, hoisted it, and swung it around, they couldn't
understand why it stood on end ...
