On my FIRST day as a computer operator I was being shown how to back up the
disk cartridges on an old Prime 300 (some consider that a horror story all by
itself). We had just lost our old CDC 60Meg Washtub so everything was being
done on Pertec 1.5 Meg cartridges. On the Prime these are in a kind of a daisy
chain: Pertec, CDC, Pertec. We backed up weekly, quarterly and yearly.

The fellow instructing me had been out of town for a month (the month the
the quarterly backups WOULD have been made if he'd been there) and forgot
about the unusual arrangement.  Without the CDC both the working copy and
the weekly backup of our primary research disk were destroyed.
