The canonical interstellar merchant series is the Nicholas van Rijn series
by Poul Anderson. There are lots of titles; _Trader_to_the_Stars_ and
_The_Man_Who_Counts_ both come to mind. They all seem to be of the
"cunning old fat man [van Rijn] outwits gorgeous young hulk" variety.
