Shouldn't this discussion be moved either to net.women or net.politics.theory?

By the way, I once read a book that argues this very point (that
society developed as a progressive set of responses to the threat of rape).  
It is a point that I wouldn't dismiss entirely out-of-hand, since it can
account for many of the knottier social contradictions (such as the proofs
of virility that can be demanded when men try to meet women in bars ;^).
