I believe you're referring to the book "Anti-intellectualism in
American Life" by Richard Hofstadter.  (I had an American History
teacher in high school whose class was a total bore and who was
himself a total jerk, but he put together one hell of a reading
list.  Another of his selections was Paine's "The Age of Reason".)
