I found it degrading, but I hadn't much choice at the time. When I worked at a hospital in a regular secretarial position, I found that my voice commanded respect and attention over the telephone, more than the average secretary's. Over the phone, people assumed I was a *doctor*. Now, in an academic department, I find that people phoning in are sometimes apologetic about asking me to take phone messages, while the women in the office are expected to do so as a matter of course. Lest anyone suspect me of wimpitude or less than total macho-manhood, I am a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 743.
