It seems like a pretty harmless affectation to me. Immature? I don't think so. If "handles" are more common among younger netters than older, I'd attribute that to the greater timidity and conservatism of older people. Gotta maintain that businesslike, serious image, and impress the boss. If anything, I'd consider the use of famous fantasy characters' names as a sign of imagination and playfulness, both positive qualities in my book.
