The Mavs already have two useless first-round-pick backup centers in Wennington and Blab. Those guys are so bad that when Motta saw what he had drafted, he went out and traded for James Donaldson, a mediocre veteran who at least knows hos to play (should be how) the position. But Kite? I'm as big a Celtics fan as anyone, but I recognize a stiff when I see one. And as much as Red can still make people look foolish at the trading table, I doubt Dallas would be so dumb as to part with the talented Detlef Schrempf for Kite AND Vincent. He is their lone salvage from those three first-rounders. It would take Boston's first-round pick (the one they got from Seattle, which will be a top-seven lottery pick) to extract Schrempf. The Globe's Bob Ryan has been advocating such a move, but I would wait to see what the lottery turns up. If they're in a position to grab Len Bias, for example, that's the thing to do. If they draft sixth or seventh, I'd trade the pick for Scrempf in a second. I have this feeling that Boston will win the lottery (we'll take Mr. Bias, please) and further incure the hatred of fans everywhere. This will prompt charges of a fix from the Celt-haters and predictions of dynasty from the frontrunners. Stay tuned. Mark Fredrickson
