Actually, your carrying capacity doesn't constrain how much gold you can have when you leave, at least in version 1.0.2. It is possible to be at your max carrying capacity (make sure you are carrying a scroll of teleportation, a ring of teleport control that you are wearing, and a potion of confusion) and NO gold. (You could drink the potion before picking up the last few gems, but that means stumbling around until you make the right moves.) Have as much gold as you can find in a pile and step on it. You will pick it up, but "collapse under your load" if you try to move. Just swallow the potion, read the scroll and select level 0. Voila!
