The few times I have gotten down to the Amulet and started the slow way back
up, I have gotten killed because I ran out of magic and was surrounded by
the dang nab monsters.  Is this normal, i.e. do I have to stock up on magic
stuff from levels I approach from above before I can hope to survive going up?
Can anyone tell if I'm doing something else wrong?

It's sure frustrating to have 1.25 megapoints and get scragged by a buncha
medium-level monsters whose only strong point was numbers and persistence.
