Lines: 13 On last Friday's edition of Wall $treet Week, Bob Nurock's elves lowered their technical market index to -5, one short of a sell signal. The week after, the DJIA and the S&P 500 both surged to record levels. Has technical analysis become so mainstream that it can no longer beat the market? Speaking of beating the market, how many people who buy and sell for themselves (rather than relying on mutual funds and investment advisors) manage to beat the performance of the S&P 500? Most investors I know come up a bit short, although they enjoy reading the Wall Street Journal and Barrons in their spare time. Bill Tuthill
