Thanks very much to the several people who sent me mail on the mechanism
whereby dbx knows the source file name and line number.  I feel a bit 
ashamed of myself for having missed it on my own--I had printed out
the intermediate assembly language, but my test case had structures and 
arrays in it and the .stabs directives made so much visual noise that
I totally missed the significance of the .stabd directives.
