Organization: CERN, Geneva/Switzerland Lines: 37 The story so far (especially for the line-eater) Now that I have got an ST1040 (I bet it's the first in Switzerland!) I have to think about software. Most of this newsgroup seems to be people with early STs, possibly 520, possibly TOS on disk, probably with the developer's kit (including DR C-compiler). It ain't me, babe! So what do I want (beg, borrow or buy)? Answer: C-compiler, terminal emulator with Kermit, RAMdisk, word-processor (with possibility of accented characters), assembler, reference guide and general utilities. So why am I boring you with all this? Answer: because the choice is wide, and getting wider. Therefore, has anyone opinions on the best:- C-compiler: DR (is it available?), Lattice C, Megamax, GST, other? Must produce good code (# dhrystones!) and be ergonomic. Emulator: Want VT-100 (or 220), preferably with Kermit. Is anyone yet distributing Kermit, either on a disk or with utility software to bootstrap? RAMdisk: Must work with TOS. Public Domain? K-RAM? Word-processor: On my CBM64 I like PaperClip, but maybe with the 1040 a WYSIWYG is nice? ST-writer is a pain to put in accented characters. Assembler: PD or buy? Reference Guide: How about the one published by Abacus: is it any good? General Utilities: Keith Hall offers a fair number: any other offers. I am willing to act as a clearing house for my area. Thanks for any info, and happy 1040ing. Mike Gerard
