I bought a 1650 compatable with a package called Total Telecom- munications a while back for $40. I saw it last week in one magazine or another for only $30. It's not Hayes compatible, but if you get a good software package, or are good enough to write your own software for it, It can be quite good. I've had mine auto-redialing, auto-answering and all the things the Hayes' can do. Of course, the Hayes is easier to use, but if your on any kind of buget and don't mind a little work (if you want to call it that) this might not be such a bad deal. You have to make sure your modem is set up to recieve the same transmition format that the other is sending. Things to check are word-length, parity type, duplex, etc. I had the same problem when calling my schools mainframe, until I found out it was set to 7 bit words and even parity. Good luck...
