In the case of women, because of the way most bathing suits are constructed, tan lines exist which are often visible in ordinary street clothing (especially around the shoulders and neck). In my opinion this is aesthetically jarring, somewhat like unties shoelaces, visible bra straps, pocket liners poking discreatly out from pants, and fat people in vests.
