When I get home (if I get home?) I will try and remember to look through my notes, but I believe you are correct. I seem to remember that people have tried, but never found a society that was truely matriarchal. As a bizarre aside this reminds me of a paper I wrote. If you want a really strange society, consider Anne McCaffrey's Pern. There are three different methods of descent, depending on whether you belong to a Guild, one of the landowner holds, or to a dragon hold. (I may have the terminology wrong).
