It is a membership organization open to Commissioned Officers of the US government, their dependents, and former such people. In CU's review of Auto Insurance Cos, USAA is always their #1 rated company. A while back USAA started a Buyers Service mainly to allow personal property insurees a means of cheaply replacing damaged, etc insured items; they opened the service to members at no extra cost. I am a USAA member but prior to using their Buyer's Service, I was sucked into a Bank One (Columbus, Ohio) deal that let me into Compu-Store free for a year in return for acepting a 21.9% interest rate Visa account. Last July, I ordered a Short-wave radio from Compu-store, using th Bank One Visa card. The radio never arrived, despite Compu-stores' promisses that "It was in the mail." I finally cancelled the order in September, and reordered it from USAA (it arrived in 10 days and was $20 cheaper). I had problems getting my refund from Compustore. I finally got it in January! the 21.6% ticking all the while. Since then, I've made 3 purchases from USAA with no problems. As far as I can tell their stuff comes from above-board channels. USAA's prices are competetive with Compu-stores, and it is reliable. -- Jim Chappell ...!seismo!vrdxhq!ms3!jrc ISN Corp. 1235A Jeff Davis Hwy, Suite 605A Arlington, Va 22202
