Don't know if this is what you are having problems with, but I have
gotten these microcom modems functional with uucp on a couple of
machines, though not Ultrix 1.2. You might check to make sure that
the Flow Control is turned off.   That has bitten me several times.
UUCP (at least the versions I was working with) doesn't handle that well.
