steve campbell at dartmouth describes pathalias behavior in which
hosta!hostb!hostc!hostz is preferred to a direct link to hostz.

this is not a bug.  why is your cost to hostz so high?  if it's
because the link is slow, expensive, or unreliable, and the hosta,
hostb, and hostc links are fast, cheap, and high quality, then isn't
it better to avoid the direct link?
