I've had my 1040 for about 3 weeks now and I have yet to notice *any*
obnoxious noises.  I recall that people were complaining about the disk
drive squealing; I think this would indicate a serious problem and that 
you should take it back to the dealer for repair and/or replacement.  I can 
believe that the ST has a bit of a quality control problem, since my machine 
came with a bad monitor cable and a bad connection from one of the mouse 
buttons -- fortunately both problems were easily fixed.
