All you need to do is place your copy of the XTREE disk in the A drive and type: >A:XTREE or >A:XTREE d: (where d is a valid drive) XTREE uses approximately 150K of memory. This means your computer must have 192K or more of memory in order for XTREE to successfully operate. When running the eXecute command, XTREE occupies approxi- mately 50K of memory. (Execute not available in demo.) The following notes should be read if you need to customize XTREE. Otherwise, use XTREE as is and enjoy it !! ***** INSTALLATION NOTES ***** SETTING UP If your system is not completely compatible with the IBM-PC and you are having difficulties, or you wish to change the colors or screen attributes you should use the XTREE install program, XTREEINS. To use this program you need three files from the XTREE distribution disk: o XTREE.EXE - This is the XTREE program. o XTREEINS.EXE - This program is used to install XTREE to run on your particular system, and to customize the colors and screen attributes that XTREE uses in its displays. o XTREEINS.DAT - This file is used by the XTREEINS program. It contains information to allow XTREE to run on various types of computer systems. Copy these files to a common directory. Once you are logged into the directory and drive which contains these files, just run XTREEINS. The program presents several menus during its execution. You make selections by keying the approporiate letter. The RETURN key is not used when making menu selections. When you run XTREEINS, the main menu presents you with the following choices: o A - Install XTREE according to your computer and monitor type. This choice allows you to select the type of computer, display hardware, and monitor that you have. o B - Change the display attributes or colors used by XTREE. If you have a color system, this choice allows you to change the XTREE color combinations. If you have a monochrome system, this choice allows you to set up the combinations of high- light, lowlight, and reverse video used by XTREE in its displays. o C - Exit the install program. This choice will cause the installation program to return to DOS. Any changes you had asked the install program to make, have already been saved. COMPUTER SYSTEM If you choose selection A from the main menu, XTREEINS presents you with a list of computer system configurations. Simply press the letter which corresponds to the hardware you have. Choices (D - G) refer to specific computer systems. Choices A, B, and C are described below: o A - This choice is used for systems which allow programs to display information by reading and writing directly to video memory, and which have the video memory at the same location as the IBM-PC. This allows for very quick displays. If you make this choice and XTREE displays "snow" or flicker- ing lines on the screen, try choices B or C. o B - This choice is used for true compatibles (as described in choice A) which have the IBM Color/Graphics controller. If you select choice A for these systems, you may get unwanted lines and dots on your screen. Choice B will clean up the displays, at the expense of a little speed. o C - This choice, which produces displays at non-optimized speeds, can be used under any of the following circumstances: o You have a true IBM-PC compatible, but choosing A or B gives "snow". o You have a computer which does not have IBM-PC compatible video memory, but does have INT 10 Bios support. o You don't know what else to do. MONITOR TYPE When XTREEINS asks you for the type of monitor you have, select A for a color monitor or B for a monochrome monitor. Choice B should also be made if you have a composite monitor. COLORS AND ATTRIBUTES When you select choice B from the XTREEINS main menu, you will be presented with abbreviated versions of XTREE's displays. XTREEINS allows you to change the colors or monochrome attributes XTREE uses. The following keys are used: o F1-F10. The function keys immediately change the colors or attributes you see. The XTREEINS screen tells you how the function keys work and what area they affect. o ESC. THe Esacpe key restores the colors and attributes XTREE was using when you first entered this screen. o RETURN. Use this key when you are finished with your changes or if you wish to abandon any changes you have made. If you have any difficulties with installation call: TECHNICAL HOT LINE: (818) 990-3505 ***** CUSTOMIZING XTREE ***** XTREE has several features which you can customize according to your own preference. There are two methods for customization: o Use the DOS environment setting capability. At the DOS prompt simply enter "SET XTREE=" followed by your custom list of options. The set of options will remain in effect until you enter a different "SET XTREE=" command or until you re-boot your system. o When you run XTREE, at the DOS prompt enter "XTREE d: XTREE=" followed by your custom list of options. "d:" is optional and is the drive you want XTREE to use initially. The customiza- tion will take effect only during the current execution of XTREE. OPTION DESCRIPTIONS Each option is a single character. You may enter as many option characters as you like in a "XTREE=" entry. If no character is entered for a particular option, XTREE will assume the default setting of the option. CURSOR USED BY XTREE. Normally XTREE uses a block cursor. When it exits it restores the cursor to the shape it had when you entered XTREE. If you specify B, C, or M XTREE will use the corresponding cursor, and keep its shape when it exits. B - Block cursor. (DEFAULT) C - Color system underscore cursor M - Monochrome system underscore cursor FILE DISPLAY MODE. When you run XTREE it initially uses the 3- column format for the File Window (see ALT/F command). If you specify 1, 2, or 3 a different format will be used. 1 - One column file display 2 - Two column file display 3 - Three column file display (DEFAULT) SORT CRITERIA. When you run XTREE it initially displays files sorted by file name. This option lets you initially sort by file name extension. N - Sort by name first, extension second. E - Sort by extension first, name second. PRINT REDIRECTION. Print catalog/paths/tree normally lists on the printer. Print redirection sends the printer output to STDOUT. CAUTION: If you redirect STDOUT to a disk file, don't use the eXecute function. You won't see the DOS prompts. P - Redirect directory print output to STDOUT KEEP FILESPEC ON RE-LOG. Normally when you use the L command to log a disk, XTREE sets the File Specification to "*.*". This option tells XTREE to retain the current Filespec setting. K - Keep the current Filespec when you log on to another disk. LAN/MAINFRAME FLAG. This option tells XTREE it is running on a network. It disables XTREE's disk access optimization and insures that XTREE's memory image of the disk information is up to date. L - XTREE is running on a network. FILENAME/EXT SEPARATOR CHARACTER. Normally XTREE displays a "." between a file name and its extension. Selecting this option replaces the period with a space. "." - Don't use a period character to separate file name and extension. SUMMARY "." Don't use period as file name separator "1" One column display "2" Two column display "3" Three column display "N" Sort by Name/Ext "E" Sort by Ext/Name "B" Block cursor "C" Color underscore cursor "M" Monochrome underscore cursor "K" Keep Filespec on re-Log "L" XTREE is on a LAN "P" Print to STDOUT EXAMPLES Once you know the flavor of XTREE you like best, you can put the "SET XTREE=" command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and the options will be active every time you run XTREE. You can temporarily set options by specifying them when you run XTREE. e.g.: C:>XTREE A: XTREE=P SET XTREE=.2CE Use color underscore cursor Sort files by Extension Use the two column file display Use a space instead of a period All other options use their default settings SET XTREE=P3K Print to STDOUT Use the three column display Keep the Filespec ***** MISC. NOTES, GOODIES, AND TIPS ***** Many of the new features in XTREE came from XTREE users. Those of you who have suggested these features now know that ESI LISTENS! If you have technical questions or need help, HOTLINE is (818) 990-3505. When you need to find a misplaced file, and you know it's somewhere in that pile of 100 floppies in the closet, use XTREE's "Keep Filespec" option. Here's how: o Run XTREE by keying "XTREE d: XTREE=K". This will enable the "Keep" option. You can also enable the "Keep" option while in XTREE by pressing F5. o Set the Filespec to the name of the file you are trying to find (e.g. "JAN82.TAX"). o Feed floppies into a drive with one hand and Log the floppies with the other. Watch the "Matching Files" statistics at the right side of the screen. o When "Matching Files" is not "0", you found it! To tag files by date & time or size, sort the File Window by the appropriate criteria and tag away by holding down the "T" key. To tag all files EXCEPT a group of files, use the CTRL/Tag command to tag the entire directory. Then change the Filespec (e.g. to *.EXE) and use CTRL/Untag. Change the Filespec back to "*.*". Now all files except the .DOC files are tagged. Some users like to have files sorted within a directory, so that DIR lists them in alphabetical order. It's easy to do with XTREE: o Make a temporary directory. o ^Move all the files in the directory to be sorted to the temp directory. o ^Move the files back to the original directory. Sorted directory !! X T R E E Every person who uses computers creates numerous files for storing information and data. Often, files concerning similar topics can be found throughout several disks or in a haphazard arrangement on a single disk. To access any given file, the user must struggle through multiple directory listings, issue many complex commands, and usually view and review to remember what's in what and where. This process is confusing and time consuming. MS-DOS provides a useful organizational structure called a directory. Directories allow the computer user to store files in separate groups on a disk. The files in a directory are kept distinct from files in other directories. MS-DOS also allows the user to organize and separate directories. Each directory on a disk, in addition to containing a group of files, can have "sub-directories" branching off from it. These sub-directories can each have their own group of files and sub-directories, and so on. This directory branching organization is called a "tree structure." When there is more than one directory on a disk, to find the way to a particular sub-directory on a disk, the user specifies a "path" of directory names. A drawback of the MS-DOS implementation of the concepts described above is that as the number of directories and/or files grows, the harder it is to keep track of them, find the data you need, and to throw away any unneeded data. The purpose of XTREE is to facilitate the file and directory maintenance process by providing you commands to access, delete, rename, view, move, list, or show any and all files within any and all directories on your floppy and hard disks. XTREE presents a "visualization" of the directories, sub-directories, and files on your disks in clear, graphic screen displays. Statistical data is also displayed at all times; this data is updated as you perform your tasks. XTREE is a powerful, interactive file management utility for the serious DOS user. XTREE is available on the IBM PC and other MS-DOS computers, including TANDY 2000, NEC APC III, and SANYO 550. XTREE, VERSION 2.0 SPEC SHEET XTREE is a powerful graphic file and directory management program. It is designed to simplify file and directory handling by providing single keystroke commands to access, delete, rename, view, move, list, or print any and all files within any and all directories on a floppy and hard disk. With it, PC-DOS users can instantly see a complete disk directory in one single display. All of XTREE's commands are clearly shown in the on-screen menu at all times. XTREE's initial screen is organized into sections that display directories, subdirectories, files and valuable statistical information. At any time, users can see every file on a disk, regardless of the directory it is in. XTREE FEATURES On-screen Menus Xtree`s simple commands are clearly displayed for easy access and use. One KeyStroke Commands All operations can be executed with a single keystroke. Directory Commands One keystroke commands easily create, rename, and delete directories. ShowAll Files See files from different directories in one display, so files are never lost. Group File Operations Tag files to copy, rename, delete, move, or print files from different directories with one command. Maintain File Organization While Copying Copy your files, automatically keeping them organized under the same directory structure. (Not available in demo.) File Back-up Copy only those files that have been modified since your last back-up. (Not available in demo.) Move Files Quickly move files from one directory to another without copying and deleting. (Not available in demo.) Rename While Copying Rename files as they are copied. (Not available in demo.) File Specifier Determines which files are displayed and available for XTREE file commands. Set to wildcard for all files, a file name for locating a specific file, or any combination of wildcard and alphabetic characters. Directory Print Functions Print the entire directory tree as it's displayed. Also, print out all files on your entire disk organized by subdirectory including name, size, date, time and attributes. File Display Sorting Sort file displays by name, extension, size, or date and time. Full Scrolling Move around your list of files with cursor positioning keys plus Home, End, Page Up and Page Down keys. View File Contents See the contents of your files on-screen. This makes it easy to determine if a file should be saved when cleaning up your disks, or to find misplaced information. Statistical Information Helpful information about disks, directories and files is always available. Execute Programs Returning to XTREE when done. (Not available in demo.) Instant Screen Updates All changes are displayed immediately, so you never have to wait for the software to catch up. On-line Help Screens Always available for quick reference. Easy To Use Manual Program manual is clear, concise and easy to understand. File Attributes View and easily change PC-DOS file attributes. Change Volume Name Without reformatting your entire disk. XTREE's POWERFUL COMMANDS Directory Commands XTREE displays a graphic picture of all your directories and sub-directories. Use the arrow keys to point to any sub- directory and the bottom window instantly shows the files within that directory. The following commands are available from the directory window: Available - Displays the space (bytes) available on any drive. Delete - Delete the current sub-directory. Filespec - Set a new file specification. XTREE will only display files that match the file specification. Wildcards are allowed. "*.*" displays all files. Log disk - Change the disk XTREE will work with. Makedir - Make a new sub-directory under the current directory. XTREE will prompt for the new name. (Not available in demo.) Print - Print the directory tree, all path names, or a catalogue of files, organized by sub-directories. Rename - Rename the current directory. (Not available in demo.) Showall - Shows ALL files in ALL directories, in one sorted display. Tag - Tags all the files in the current sub-directory. Untag - Untags all the files in the current sub-directory. Volume - Change the volume name of the disk. eXecute - Execute programs from XTREE. Press enter to return to XTREE. (Not available in demo.) RETURN - The return key takes you to the file window, to work with the files in the current sub- directory. ALTernate Commands Alternate commands may be accessed from the directory window by holding down the ALT key. File display - Toggles the file display through short, medium, and long format displays. Display only the information you need. Sort - Sorts all files displayed by Name, Extension, Date and Time, or Size. Tag,Untag - Tags or untags files by attributes (R,A,S,H). Use this to tag all your files that need archiving (+A). File Commands The following commands are available from the file window: Attributes - View and change the DOS attributes (Read Only, System, Hidden, and Archive). Copy - Copies the highlighted file, specify a new name and destination directory. CTRL C (^C) copies all tagged files in one operation. (Not available in demo.) Delete - Delete a single file, or all tagged files with CTRL D (^D). (Not available in demo.) Filespec - Set a new file specification. XTREE will only display files that match the file specification. Wildcards are allowed. "*.*" displays all files. Log disk - Log XTREE on to another disk. Move - Moves the highlighted file, specify a new name and destination directory. CTRL M (^M) moves all tagged files in one operation. Moving files is quicker than copying and deleting and requires no extra disk space. (Not available in demo.) Print - Print a single file or all tagged files(^P). Rename - Rename a single file or all tagged files(^R). (Not available in demo.) Tag - Tags the highlighted file. CTRL T (^T) tags all displayed files. Untag - Untags the highlighted file. CTRL U (^U) untags all displayed files. View - View the contents of a file in HEX or ASCII. eXecute - Run a program from XTREE. ALTernate commands Alternate commands are also accessible from the file window by holding down the ALT key. In addition to the ALT commands listed above, XTREE provides ALT Copy. The ALT Copy command will copy all tagged files to identical sub- directories on your destination disk as the files are in on the source disk, thus preserving the entire directory structure. Directories will be automatically created on the destination disk if necessary. Program Requirements XTREE require an IBM PC/AT/XT or most compatibles including Tandy 2000 with 192K of memory, and MS-DOS 2.0 or PC-DOS. Not copy protected.
