Thanks for all the info in response to my request. Here are the results: Water stain: Many people recommended shellac or a product called Kilz to cover the water stain. (No thanks to the person who said "Any good paint will do it," why some folks respond to messages when they don't know diddly-squat is beyond me.) Roof: It turns out that the yucky Fiberglas shingles I had seen were an aberration, and there are really nice looking ones available. There are two houses nearby that have these installed over old cedar shingle roofs and the double layering of the roof is totally undetectable. The roofers even do something to the roof edges so you don't see the underneath layer. Amazing. Also, they're more rot-resistant and fire-resistent (I stay home and worry every Fourth of July.) So that's what I plan to go with.
