In fact, it should be theoretically possible to implement a moderate
speed reverse channel within the Telebit hardware.  I have strongly
urged the engineers there to consider doing so.  This isn't to say that
this is a trivial task--that thing is stuffed with complicated firmware
and any substantial changes involve considerable work.  But I'm hopeful
that it will be done in a future firmware release.
