Concerning my rn/inews/dbm problem...
Can't believe I forgot to say which version of news!!!  From 'defs.h':
#define NEWS_VERSION   "B 2.10.3 4.3bsd-beta 6/6/85"
/*	@(#)defs.dist	2.47	6/6/85	*/
rn is 4.3 patch level 27.

Maybe another clue; here's todays history stats:
