See volume 3 page 177 last paragraph. It does not say "-1" because that makes assumptions about your hardware it is described as 'addresses of all ones are to be interpreted as meaning "all"'. The word broadcast is also not used because it makes assumptions about your hardware. Subnets are mentioned in volume 3 page 244 but I did not see any detailed discussion. The documents make an excelent starting point but may not be complete for all applications.
