I guess we've forgotten about CRC checks now that modem comm

Not everybody has...all OS-9 modules have a checksum.  For that matter,
S-record format includes checksums.  I once proposed S-record instead of
uuencode/BinHex for executables for that reason, but the proposal seems
to have fizzled out.
