We think that taking a QL with him wouldn't help because it relies on the 50Hz mains frequency for internal timing. Also, the RGB signal may not be the same. If anyone knows if it's possible to make it work over there, or knows of a QL in the area (eg Berkeley) which could be borrowed for 3 days I would be very grateful.
