I recently bought the Avatex 1200 modem for my 800XL and have found it to be more than satisfactory. It sells for under $100, possibly quite a bit under if you get a group purchase together. I paid $80 but that was kind of a favor from a dealer who is also an Atari enthusiast. The Avatex 1200 is a Hayes-compatible (except for a couple of fine points) 1200-baud modem with autodial and autoanswer capability. The Avatex is available quite widely. Two sources I can point you at are Rick Pommet, Nelson Communications, Inc. (617) 738-6000 Paul Swanson, Nite Lite Systems Inc. (617) 663-4463 If you want to avoid buying a separate interface, Nite Lite Systems sells a modified version of the Avatex 1200 which includes an interface similar to the "R-verter". The modified modem-plus-interface price is a bit higher, and you would have to get a quotation from Paul Swanson on it. Again, a group purchase would probably cut the price. If you want to buy a genuine Atari 850 interface, they can be obtained (last time I tried) at CSC, Inc., Hightstown NJ, (609) 448-8889. The price was $109 when I bought mine a few months ago. The 850 provides 4 serial ports and one Centronics parallel port. It is the most standard way to go and runs with most commercial Atari software. -John Sangster jhs@mitre-bedford.arpa
