Don't know about the DOS/Xenix stuff but (a) Greenleaf sells a comm library
package that will work with some board they sell that offers 8 or more
com ports, (b) the latest pc week, may 20 on page 36, discusses a product
from Server Technology that can add up to 18 com ports to a pc in increments
of 6.  For the latter try (800) 835-1515.
