     I just got a copy of Percent which is a UNIX-like shell for MS-DOS. My
initial reaction is that it is great. In fact I like it better than the
Bourne shell on our 3B2. Percent seems to be totally compatible with MS-DOS.
All programs seem to work without problems, whereas most MS-DOS programs
did not work with Wendin's PC/UNIX which I tried a few months ago.

     Percent has Bourne shell syntax with some C-shell enhancements including
alias, history, I/O redirection, and directory stack. The eval command used 
with an alias lets you give full shell filename expansion to MS-DOS program 
command lines. There is an on-line help facility. There is a cu command which 
I am using to write this article.

     Percent has an advantage over real UNIX on a PC because you can use
all the MS-DOS software. The main disadvantages are the lack of background
processing and the lack of some UNIX utilities, such as awk, comm, od, sed, 
tr, uniq, and vi. PC/VI and FANSI-CONSOLE work with Percent and make a good
combination. Now all I need is a laser printer and troff.
