Wouldn't it be possible to compress only the invariant portion of the data and not compress the headers? Perhaps this would involve too much change to the mail and news systems. Considering some of the volume that goes into the data part of net.sources and .maps (or .politics :-) it might get nearly the same effect as compressing the whole thing.
