I reported another article like this a month or two ago: people by and large
suggested that it was compress mangling the article.  I've enclosed the
path that it took to reach us and the affected line; could newsadmins and
the guardians-of-the-gateways check it out please?  Is somebody using a duff
batcher/unbatcher somewhere?  NOTE: relevant lines have been folded to fit
on the screen.
