[...] There's another reason to do so with BSD 4.3 (and presumably Ultrix v1.2): sorting the filenames will take direct advantage of kernel improvements in directory searching (instead of always returning to the start of a directory to search for a file, the kernel now starts where the last search left off via a cacheing scheme).
