In general, if you want to string together a bunch of boxes in
TeX that are not necessarily `well aligned' with each other,
you will do better to build a set of \hbox es and \vbox es and
just paste them together as appropriate.  This is in effect
an approximation of what `tbl' does with troff (but can probably
be done more accurately, if more verbosely).
